CENSUS 2021 INSIGHTS
New Developments
The most apparent difference with the new 2021 Census data is how the population is now distributed. Given the overall population increase of 8.6% across Australia, there has been apparent urban sprawl and new development in the outer fringes of our Capital Cities.
Population increases can also be seen in and around new infrastructure. In this example we can see that the completion of Tallawong Station NSW in 2019 has seen the development of the Tallawong Station Precinct.
Analyzing this area in OneMap shows us that development has brought with it a Population Increase of 85% between 2016 and 2021 as well as a Dwelling increase of 110% over the same period.
Gentrification of the Inner Ring
Gentrification of the Inner Ring of Melbourne is another pattern that is apparent when exploring the latest Census Data in OneMap. West Footscray VIC, for example, saw a 32+% Increase in Household Income from a 2016 value of $1,536 to a 2021 value of $2,038.
Compare this to more ‘established’ suburbs in Metro VIC such as Malvern, or Middle Park which have had 15% and 18% increases respectively.
SUBURB | 2016 H/HOLD INCOME | 2021 H/HOLD INCOME | % INCREASE |
---|---|---|---|
Richmond | $2,009 | $2,303 | 14.63% |
Middle Park | $2,300 | $2,639 | 14.74% |
Malven | $2,390 | $2,813 | 17.70% |
Yarraville | $1,995 | $2,502 | 25.41% |
Footscray | $1,553 | $1,973 | 27.04% |
West Footscray | $1,536 | $2,038 | 32.68% |
Highett | $1,624 | $2,258 | 39.04% |
